Marine Iguana

The Galapagos became a National Park in 1959, and tourism started in the 1960s.

However, opportunities for fishing, farming and tourism brought a mass of poor farmers and fishermen from the mainland, causing violent confrontations with the National Parks Service, most recently over sea cucumber quotas.

The Marine Iguana is a species of iguana found only in the Galapagos.

It is unique among modern lizards because it is a marine reptile that can forage in the sea for algae.

They make for some interesting photo ops.

The Standoff

After feeding in the cold waters, they can be seen basking on rocks in the hot sun.
